24 hour drinking a mistake-Gordon brown

Just a link and a comment today:

Gordon Brown says he was never happy with 24 hour drinking and will create powers to curb it in areas where binge drinking is a problem.

Yet another U-Turn by Gord, I think that anyone with common sense knew that allowing 24 hour drinking was a mistake, and now it seems that Gord and his gang have found a brain cell, probably in his handkerchief.

If he was never happy with the policy why oh why did he allow it to become law?

Dark room, arse and torch come to mind.

I don't think 24 hour drinking has made things any worse, mostly because there are hardly any 24 hour pubs and off licences in the UK. In this day and age, we should have the freedom to buy alcohol at any time of day (or night). The restrictive laws were only brought in because of the war but they were never changed [until 2005]. What we really need is MORE 24 hour licences to be granted so we can get out of this 'last orders, get as much alcohol down your neck before closing time' attitude. Some of us work unsociable hours so should be able to grab some alcohol after work no matter what time of day it is. Most people don't even know where their local 24 hour off licence is! There is a list of 24 hour off licences in London at www.24houralcohol.co.uk but if you are anywhere else in the UK, good luck finding somewhere to (legally) buy alcohol at night, it's not easy!
